Danny's Point: Winter Skating Tips

As we head into the new year, you may have made some goals for your skating - even in the colder weather!  Whether you want to skate more often, improve your skating skills, or want to train for a marathon, these tips are for you.  Skating in the winter can be a fun, rewarding experience if you are prepared. Read the article to learn tips from Rollerblade® ambassador, Danny Aldridge.

Gear Up & Be Prepared
Check your skates to make sure they are in good condition. Check for wear, especially on wheels and bearings. As with any winter sport, dress in layers and always go for moisture-wicking materials underneath.Have all the essentials that you need like your phone, water, extra layers and a first-aid kit (use our hip pack or backpack to carry it).  It’s also helpful stretch and warm up before you begin.

Check the Weather
Before you head out, check the weather to make sure it’s not going to snow or be extremely cold. If it is, try another day to skate.

Choose your Location
Find paths that are cleared of snow and ice, and always be aware of wet or damp surfaces. If unsure about a spot, test it first or find another location.

Adjust Your Moves
To boost your stability, shorten your strides, maintain a low center of gravity, and use the Scissor position. Don’t forget - on colder surfaces, wheels may have less grip!

Buddy Up
Skate with friends or find a local group skate. If something happens, you've got each other's backs.

Stay Visible
Less daylight makes you less visible. Use reflective gear, LED lights, or reflective tape can make a huge difference.  Also, for extra light, check out our Moonbeam wheels.

Check your Gear
After you are back from your skate, make sure to clean and dry your skates, especially wheels and bearings, to prolong their lifespan. Skating in the winter is a great way to stay active and to kick off the New Year on a positive note. Use our tips to skate safely and have fun!
