Explain the feeling you had the first time you put on skates.
I felt at home. It was like becoming whole, how had I gone 8 years of my life without putting on skates. I often feel awkward in my body, but on skates I feel truely comfortable. I started recreationally skating when I was 8 years old.
What is your inspiration to keep skating? I am inspired by my friends and the people I’ve looked up to since I found aggressive skating. I am also continually motivated by the things the younger people are doing nowadays. There are a lot of interesting perspectives on tricks and skating in general which I find inspiring. I’ve also found a lot of new and interesting things in the world of non aggressive skating, there's a lot to be learned.
We truly believe skating makes a better world. How do you think skating makes the world a better place? I think that skating improves the world through all of the happiness it creates. It has a ton of positive health benefits both mental and physical. I think bringing skating to a new generation would definitely benefit the world by fostering a tight knit community which supports everyone involved. Even though there's a lot of work to be done I think skating should be applauded for it’s inclusivity and openness.
I’m extremely grateful to be given this small platform to promote the values of inclusivity and allyship, so the possibilities are pretty endless for skatings positive contributions.
How do you keep progressing and reinventing yourself? My main motivation to continue skating is the pure love I feel for rolling. I am also a fairly harsh critic of my own skating so trying to improve is always at the forefront for me. With the constant production of “content” brought on by social media I find lots of places to see and hear new things about skating.
As for reinvention I’m not sure I’ve ever really done that outside of my having grown as a person in immeasurable ways, thanks to skating.
What’s the most helpful tip you want to share with any skater? If you love skating keep doing it, don't judge yourself or compare your skating to others. Just focus on the things you love about rolling.
Imagine a world filled with animals who can skate. If you could be any of those animals what would you be and why? I don’t know if I ever considered what it would be like to skate as an animal. After some consideration I think I would probably go with an anthropomorphic cat of some sort, maybe a bobcat. They have pretty awesome jumping ability as well as agility which seems like it could be useful on skates. Plus I think they are quite resilient so the tosses when I fail wouldn’t hopefully take me out permanently.
